This is John Gilbert. I think the film is Flesh and the Devil, the film in which began an affair with Greta Garbo.

Not John Gilbert, though the moustache does make it look like him! I was looking for Nils Asther in Storm at Daybreak (1933), with Kay Francis.

Funny you mention Garbo; Asther was called a "male Greta Garbo." They made two films together in '29: The Single Standard and Wild Orchids.
