Gary Cooper as Sergeant York.

Howard Hawks made Sergeant York in 1941 at the outbreak of WWII, so it was certainly a boost for our troops by remembering our biggest hero of the previous war.

Gary Cooper won 3 Oscars - an honorary one late in his career, and 2 for Best Performance by an Actor, for High Noon and this one, Sergeant York. His performances always seemed so natural that he was the perfect actor for film.

It's also one of the few WWI movies I can think of that didn't have an overtly anti-war message.
