The Trivia Hound

601. Philippines, Apr. 1942

Jim got #600!

You might think that after Pearl Harbor, the American public's rage against Japan couldn't be stronger. You'd be wrong.

Hint: They're both named Robert.

Only Roberts I can think of are Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, and Robert Downey Jr.

I don't suppose they're any of these guys right? Dunno, I'm done with this one.

BTW, thanks for the hint. Maybe someone else can make better use of it.

LOL None of those!

The actors are Robert Walker and Robert Taylor, both fairly substantial leading men in their day. I think the film is Bataan.

John, what would you do without me ?
Blogger Jim, at 2:03 PM
You think right! It is Bataan (1943). There were lots of war films set around the Philippines, so we'll be back soon.

I'm glad we can count on you for the classics, Jim! (DesiLinguist knows his classics too... are you still out there, Desi?)

Without Jim Trivia Hound would have to take a giant leap forward or be stuck in the 40s forever.

Nah, there are a few modern films set in the 1940s (like U-571). But incorporating the classics makes it a richer experience! Besides, most of these are great films. OK, maybe not Bataan....

My students, Juniors in high school, seem to hate it when I show a film in black-and-white. I think they're missing a lot of wonderful film.

Several years ago I showed Freshmen a little of the old Great Expectations film and they hated it too. I pointed out that was Alec Guiness. "Who?" Alec Guiness! "Nope." Obi-Wan Kenobi? "Nope, sorry." Star Wars? "We weren't born yet..." Ugh.

Great Expectations has that fantastic opening scene with Magwitch and Pip - a total stormy atmosphere created by David Lean, a great film maker who really knows how to tell a story.
