The film is Samuel Fuller's The Big Red One.

So-named for the symbol on the patch for the 1st Infantry Division, also visible on Lee's helmet!

My father landed on Omaha Beach as an infantryman. His job was to carry and draw maps for his company. He always bragged that he knew ahead of time exactly where the Allies would land - just him and Eisenhower !
