The Trivia Hound

748. Memphis, July 1954

Jim got #747!

This is not a movie and I know you all know who he is! BUT here's the question: What was the first Elvis hit?

It depends on what you mean by hit. His first record that sold was "That's Alright Mama" on Sun. His first hit for RCA was "Heartbreak Hotel."

Fair enough...

One night in July 1954, Dewey Phillips played "That's All Right Mama" on his Red Hot and Blue show, on WHBQ in Memphis. The record was finally released on July 19, 1954. There were 7,000 orders. I guess that's not enough to qualify as a "hit" but it was definitely clear he was onto something.
