It was odd that these two movies came out so close together in time, but it wasn't the first time they pulled something like that. I remember a cable company put on an epic Helen of Troy movie, and right after that here came Troy.
Cynically put, I think that the guys with the money will spend more money on whatever has been recently successful. That's why we get so many remakes and comics made into live action - it all indicates a real lack of new plots and ideas. To be honest, it's even worse in the theater on Broadway.
Cynically taken! Film writers who come up with something new and different almost always talk about how hard it was getting a studio to invest in it. I forget how many studios turned down Back to the Future before someone finally gave it a chance. "That doesn't sound safe. Let's remake Psycho scene-for-scene instead." Apropos, Eragon appears so wholly derivative that I don't plan to see it.
Thanks to the Wayback Machine, we're currently working our way through "Hollywood history" from the Stone Age to the modern era--and beyond. I remembered to bring my camera, but I need your help identifying the people we meet and from what context they came (i.e., what show or movie they appeared in). Everyone is encouraged to participate.
