The Trivia Hound

897. U.S., September 1964

Jim got #896!

Offhand I can think of two '60s shows that positively portrayed Russians. This was one; you'll have to wait a very long time for the other!

I believe this is David McCallum as Ilya Kyriakin(sp?) of The Man from U.N.C.L.E..

Right! Illya Kuryakin started off as barely more than an extra but became a co-star pretty quickly.

There are efforts to bring this show to DVD but it's tied up in a legal battle over who has the rights to it!

Later in the decade, Star Trek had a Russian navigator, Pavel Chekhov, played by Walter Koenig. Is he the one you're thinking of ?

Sure is! Chekhov wasn't in the show at the inception, and Gene Roddenberry heard that the Russians had criticized him because here was this show about space pioneers and there were no Russians in it, even though Russians were the first men in space. Soo... hello Pavel Chekhov.

But I think I'll save Star Trek until the 23rd century.
