This was the Tower at the University of Texas from which Charles Whitman shot fourteen innocent people.

I went to undergraduate college there. There's a mark in one of the statutes where it was supposedly struck by a bullet.

My research said that this tragedy was the first of all the totally violent, almost random attacks that continue to this day in places like Columbine High School.
