Before SNL, before Laugh-In, there were these two. They might look wholesome but after a while they agitated the network censors so badly they had to submit shows in advance for review and approval.

Tom and Dick Smothers. I just saw them in the film The Aristocrats in which Tommy tells Dick the dirtiest joke of all time, but Dickie doesn't think it's funny.

I really can't recommend that film to you, John. It's made up of almost every comedian you've ever seen telling and commenting on the same joke. Each comedian tries to outdo the other in grossness. Hearing the joke once is alright, but the relentless grossout element is not truly my idea of entertainment.
