I believe this is the Selective Service lottery. They randomly give your birthday a number from 1 to 365. That becomes the order in which men were called for the draft.

I was a part of this, but my number was high enough that I was never called.

Right, Jim! September 14 was the first date pulled, and I suppose it wasn't too long until thousands of Virgos received their notices.
